LOCAL
STUDENT TO ATTEND STATE LEVEL MISSOURI SCHOLARS ACADEMY
Josh Aleckson, a College Heights Christian School 10th grader, has
been chosen to participate in the Missouri Scholars Academy, as one
of only 330 students from across the state. The three-week
academy for students ready to begin their Junior year will be held
on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia.
The Missouri Scholars Academy was established to provide
educational experiences and enrichment opportunities which may
differ significantly from those provided in the more traditional
high school setting. The program is based on the premise that
Missouri’s gifted youth must be provided with special opportunities
for learning and personal development in order for them to realize
their full potential. The Academy’s curriculum gives participants to
choose one major course of study and one minor academic field with
personal and social dynamics classes.

HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR SELECTED FOR STATE ACADEMIC HONOR
High
school senior Rachel Michelle Calandro of College Heights Christian
School has been selected for the 2009 Missouri Scholars 100, a
statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri’s top academic
students in the graduating class of 2009. The announcement was made
by Daniel Lewis, principal at College Heights Christian School,
Joplin, MO. Miss Calandro and the other 99 students will be
recognized at a luncheon in Columbia on April 26th.
Missouri Scholars 100 is a program sponsored by the Missouri
Association of Secondary School Principals. Schools across Missouri
were invited to nominate candidates for this state wide recognition.
The selection is based primarily on a formula using the student’s
grade point average and ACT or SAT score. Each student nominated had
to first meet criteria of an “Academic Decathlon,” which included
ten “events” designed to assure the academic strength of the
student. To meet the decathlon requirements, the student must have a
minimum GPA of 3.750, a minimum ACT score of 29 or a minimum SAT
score of 1,900, be ranked in the upper 10% of the class, and have
taken upper level courses in mathematics, science, English, and
foreign language. The student must also have excellent attendance,
be an exemplary school citizen, and be involved it the school
activity program.
Jim L. King, Executive Director of the
principals’ association, said, “Students who are selected to this
program have taken a rigorous course of study and have maintained
the highest academic standards. The Missouri Association of
Secondary School Principals wants to celebrate the achievement and
success of these students and their schools.”
Rachel
Calandro is the daughter of Christopher and Theresa Calandro of
Joplin. Rachel holds a GPA of 4.0 with a score of 34 on her ACT and
is expected to be Valedictorian. Her school activities include Cross
Country, Track & Field, Drama, National Honor Society, Math League,
Scholar’s Bowl, and Missions trips. Rachel has attended CHCS since
5th grade.
